April’s danceXchange brings dance from around the world and from our own backyard. Our monthly dance showcase will feature special guest artist Julie Simon with her Afro-Samba troupe, Tropicaleiza at Old Town Temecula Community Theater on Tuesday, April 15th at 7:00 PM on the Merc stage.
Julie Simon has been a professional dancer for over 20 years, dancing in styles ranging from Brazilian, Caribbean, and Latin dances to African dance styles. She has performed internationally in 11 different countries. A California native, she was based in San Francisco for 7 years where she toured and performed all over the Bay Area and internationally. Julie then moved to Paris, France, where she danced for 7 years touring all over Europe, as well as the Caribbean, and Africa.
Julie has been teaching and performing since 2003 and founded Tropicaleiza, an Afro-Samba dance company in 2006. In 2011, she was an invited speaker for a TedX event, where she spoke on the transforming power of dance. She is a partner in Room to Dance/World to Dance in Riverside.
Tropicaleiza will take the Merc stage on Tuesday, April 15th along with numerous other dance artists who will show original dance works, ranging from the polished, improvised, and in-progress. Dancers include Val Carnahan, Ana Sanchez, Chad Ortiz, and Raks el Anwar (from Oceanside) who will present three different pieces celebrating the Lebanese Dance tradition.
danceXchange is in its fourth year of dance production and is a proud staple in the dance programming offered by Temecula Presents and Dance Theatre Collective of Southern California. It is presented the third Tuesday of every month and is open to all dancers of all styles.
