Performing in the intimate warmth of the Merc, this month’s danceXchange–Tuesday, November 17th at 7:00 PM–will be an exciting and eclectic collection of dance artists from Southern California. Our special guest artists are from Navarasa Dance Theatre; coming to us from Los Angeles, this company is based in both the US and in India.
Navarasa Dance Theater (www.navarasa.org) has been creating, performing and teaching art that engages and inspires diverse communities and audience members for more than 15 years. Co-directed by Dr. Aparna Sindhoor (founder), Anil Natyaveda and SM Raju, Navarasa is a pioneering South Asian American Contemporary Dance Theater company based in the U.S. and India. Navarasa has a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary works inspired by Bharatanatyam and folk dance forms, martial arts (Kalarippayattu), diverse theater and music traditions, aerial dance, yoga and storytelling. Navarasa has toured in North America, Asia and Europe. Navarasa offer classes in Bharatanatyam, Kalari ppayattu martial arts, Yoga and contemporary dance in Los Angeles, Boston and online. Navarasa’s free training program, Dance For Everyone, is bringing dance to more than 150 students in India and the U.S.
Founder and artistic director Dr. Aparna Sindhoor trained in the Mysore style of Bharatanatyam for more than fifteen years with legendary teacher, Dr. K. Venkatalakshamma (Mysore palace dancer), as well as yoga, martial arts, contemporary, aerial dance, music and theater for over two decades. She has a PhD in Dance, Cultural and Women’s Studies from Boston University. Co-Director Anil Natyaveda is a choreographer, dancer, teacher and martial artist trained in classical, contemporary and aerial dance forms from renowned teachers. He has studied the South Indian martial art Kalari ppayattu for more than 30 years and is one its leading exponents. He has been touring as a professional dancer since 1991. Together they have created over 15 full length dance theater productions. Navarasa Dance Theater has performing arts training schools in USA and India. Their ongoing teaching programs include Dance for Everyone, which offers scholarships and free dance training for children.
Local dance artists performing this month include Vicious Circle Dance, Rebecca Mishler, Raks Anwar Dance, and the Community Improvisation Class with Aaron Shaw and Kristin Brown.
